Dispersion of second-order optical nonlinearity in chromophoric self-assembled films by optical parametric amplification

Abstract

The design of an optical parametric amplifier (OPA) based measurement system that makes possible expedient dispersion measurements of second-harmonic generation (SHG) over a wide and continuous wavelength range is reported. The χ(2) dispersion in chromophoric self-assembled stilbazolium films were characterized using this system. These films display only moderate absorbance at the linear absorption maximum, thus allowing the resonant nonlinear optical (NLO) behavior to be studied. The derived origin and mechanism of the large χ(2) response are shown to be in good agreement with theoretical calculations. It clearly argues that a single optical excitation is responsible for the large enhancements in these self-assembled structures.
