Abstract

p-Toluenesulfonic acid is electrocatalytically hydroxylated to the alcohol,p-HO3SC6H4CH2OH, by a system consisting of aqueous PtCl2- 4 as CH activation catalyst, phosphomolybdic acid as redox mediator, in an electrochemical cell containing a carbon cloth anode.
