Electronic spectra of carotenoids. β-Carotene

Abstract

Linear dichroic spectra of rans- and cis-β-carotenes in stretched polyethylene films have been reexamined. Self-consistent assignments of the major absorption bands have been made on the basis of polarization directions and molecular orbital predictions. The angle between the 1B ← A and 1C ← A transition moments in cis-β-carotene is very near 90δ.
