Abstract

Experiments were performed on beta-alumina grown by two methods: from a flux not exceeding 1300 degree C and from a melt at about 2000 degree C. The experiments included x-ray scattering, neutron diffuse scattering, ion back scattering, the Mossbauer effect, infrared absorption and reflection, microwave absorption and reflection, nuclear magnetic relaxation, specific heat at low temperatures, and inelastic neutron scattering. The potential determining the barrier height and activation energy for diffusion is determined by local interactions of the ions or defects with the host lattice. Moreover, there is a large distribution of barrier heights in the system.
