Harnessing photosynthesis to produce a renewable source of fuel

Abstract

A cubic cluster containing four manganese atoms, four oxygen atoms and a calcium atom located in the center of PS-II particles in the chloroplasts of the leaves of plants is the catalytic site for photosynthetic oxygen evolution. For the past 11 years we have studied models of this structure with the formula, Mn4O4(Ar2PO2)6 with the goal of harnessing this process for production of hydrogen and oxygen as a renewable source of fuel. Much of this research has been conducted by undergraduates and Project SEED students at Rider University in collaboration with the research group of Dr. G. Charles Dismukes at Princeton University. The results of these studies and the role of the undergraduate students and SEED students will be discussed.
