High efficiency carrier multiplication in PbSe nanocrystals

Abstract

The occurrence of impact ionization (II) with high efficiency in semiconductor nanocrystal (NC) was investigated. The transient absorption was used to monitor carrier population dynamics in high quality, oleic acid-passivated colloisal PbSe NCc samples. It was observed that PbSe NCs had a broad size-tunable Eg that facilitated the construction of tandem cells and they absorbed strongly from the ultraviolet to the near infrared. It was suggested that II was likely to provide significant benefits with regards to other desirable properties of NCs.
