High temperature electrical properties and defect chemistry of La2-xCaxCuO4-y superconductors - I. Electrical properties

Abstract

The thermoelectric power and electrical conductivity of La2-xCaxCuO4-y superconductors were measured for doping levels, x = 0-0.16, under oxygen partial pressures, P(O2) = 1-10-5 atm, at temperatures, T = 700-1000°C. Despite the reported difference in their oxygen nonstoichiometry behavior, the observed electrical properties of Ca-doped La2CuO4 are similar to those of Ba-and Sr-doped La2CuO4. The solubility limit was determined to be within x = 0.10-0.12, from XRD and electrical measurements. The conduction mechanism has been identified as band-type conduction for x > 0 and as either band-type or small polaron conduction for x = 0. An apparent band gap of 0.74 eV (band conduction) or 1.11 eV (small polaron) was obtained for La2CuO4 at 800°C.
