Impact-parameter dependence of K-shell ionization by protons

Abstract

By means of a coincidence technique we have studied the distribution in scattering angle and inelastic energy loss of protons which have ionized the K shell in a collision with an atom. At low proton velocities, the angular distribution may be interpreted as an impact-parameter dependence and compared to semiclassical calculations. In particular, the predicted importance of the adiabatic distance, rad=vω, is confirmed.
