Abstract

The utilization of CO2 for fuel production requires efficient and economical reduction of CO2. There are several approaches to the reduction of CO2 including electrocatalytic reduction with electrons and protons and thermal reduction using hydrogen or a hydrogen donor. Electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 can be used to produce CO, formate, or higher hydrocarbons, while most thermal reductions of CO2 (at moderate temperatures) produce formic acid or formate. We will present our latest results on the synthesis and catalytic activities of new electrocatalysts and new thermal catalysts using PNP (R2PCH2NR'CH2PR2) and tridentate phosphine (HOCH2P(CH2CH2PR2)2) ligands on palladium and ruthenium.
