Niobium germanium telluride: A new member of the niobium(x)-M-tellurium(2x) family

Abstract

During the course of investigating novel low dimensional ternary chalcogenide compounds, we have synthesized Nb3GeTe6, a new member of the layered telluride phases that belongs to the NbxMTe2x family. The crystal structure of Nb3GeTe6 has been determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma (#62) with lattice parameters a=6.435(2) A ̊, b=13.915(4) A ̊, c=11.524(2) A ̊, V=1032.0(8) A ̊3 and Z=4. The final residual index is converged to R=4.7%, Rw =5.9%. The structure consists of layers of mixed Nb Ge sheets capped with tellurium atoms from both sides. Both germanium and niobium exhibit an unusual coordination environment in the layered framework.
