Abstract

Organic compound [(CH3CH2CH2) 2NH2}5In5Sb6S 19·1.45H2O (1) was described, composed of anionic layers with large windows that allow its organic cations to be rapidly exchanged with other ions. (1) is found to have exceptional Cs ion exchange specificity and is able to discriminate this ion against all the other alkali metal cations. The compound adopts the space group P2/c and features extended inorganic layers that are parallel to the ac-plane. The large windows of (1) anionic layers are enough for large molecules or ions to pass through it and are pesudo-hexagonally arranged to give a chicken-wire mesh appearance to the layers. The results show that (1) is stable in the pH range of 4.3-10.0 at room temperature and the Cs ion exchange is successful in this range with vigorous shaking for 24 hours.
