Protonation of metalmetal bonds in heterobimetallic compounds linked by a heterodifunctional ligand

Abstract

Addition of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid to the heterobimetallic compounds (CO)4ReMo(CO)35-C5H4P(C6H4-p-CH3)2] (I) and (CO)4MnMo(CO)35-C5H4P(C6H4-p-CH3)2] (II) results in protonation of the metalmetal bond to give cationic compounds with bridging hydrides (III and IV). Deprotonation of III and IV with triethylamine regenerates I and II in high yield.
