Abstract

It has been shown that rare earth orthovanadates in which the rare earth cation is not easily reducible can be active and selective catalysts for the oxidative dehydrogenation of butane. The catalytic behavior of the catalyst is closely related to the rates of reduction and reoxidation of the oxide under steady state conditions. Temperature programmed reduction and reoxidation can be used to describe the extent of reduction of an oxide at steady state, and therefore its catalytic behavior.
