Ni SURFACES STUDIES BY AES, UPS, LEED, AND ION SCATTERING.

Abstract

A study was made of the the Si(111) surface after various heat treatments with small amounts of Ni( less than equivalent to 1 monolayer) present. It is found that three types of reconstructions can be obtained: 7 multiplied by 7, ″1 multiplied by 1″ and 19** one-half multiplied by 19** one-half . Photoemission spectra show that the metallic nature of the dangling bond surface state, characteristic of the clean 7 multiplied by 7 surface, disappears for the ″1 multiplied by 1″ and 19** one-half multiplied by 19** one-half surfaces. MeV ion scattering establishes that the average surface atom displacement parallel to the surface is significantly larger for the 19** one-half multiplied by 19** one-half surface than for both the clean 7 multiplied by 7 and the ″1 multiplied by 1″ surfaces.
