STM study of single-walled carbon nanotubes

The electronic density of states of atomically resolved single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been studied using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Sharp van Hove singularities (VHS) in electronic local density of states (LDOS) of SWNTs at larger energy scales were observed. Remarkably good agreement was obtained between experiment and π-only calculations, although deviations suggest that further work will be required to understand fully the band structure of SWNTs in contact with surfaces.
