Abstract

The main energy supply for all higher life on earth is provided by the biological process of oxygenic photosynthesis, which converts the light energy from the sun into chemical energy. The primary step in this energy conversion, the light-induced charge separation, is catalyzed by two distinct, membrane intrinsic protein complexes, photosystems I and II. Here, we describe the structure and function of photosystem I and II by summarizing the present structural information on both photosystems and correlating this information to the function of both systems.
