This paper discusses XPS characterization of the iron phases associated with Fischer-Tropsch catalysts. Results obtained for single-phase metal, oxide, and carbide samples are presented. Methods for estimating the extent of carbide formation during low conversion synthesis, and the extent of catalyst oxidation at high conversions are illustrated. This approach is used to monitor the evolution of an initially reduced, unsupported iron catalyst during synthesis at low conversion levels.
