Surface plasmons at single nanoholes in Au films

Abstract

The generation of surface plasmons polaritons (SPP) at single nanoholes in Au films was studied using near-field scanning optical microscopy. The experiments were carried out on 100 nm thick Au films sputtered onto 300 μm fused quartz substrates. The results show that the subwavelength holes in thin metal films act as point-like SPP sources at normal or near-normal incidence. It was suggested that this source can be manipulated by varying the angle and polarization of the incident beam.
