Surface relaxation in liquid water and methanol studied by x-ray absorption spectroscopy

Abstract

The surface sensitivity of ion-yield extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) of liquid microjets was exploited. As a result, the surface relaxation of the near-neighbor O-O distance in methanol and water was determined. It was found that the O-O distance undergo a 5.9% expansion.
