The resonant interband contribution to the TEOS signal

Abstract

A strong interband contribution to the signal obtained by resonant transmittance electro-optical sampling (TEOS) is revealed by a theoretical analysis. The theory is based on the semiconductor Bloch equations. It leads to χ(3) contribution to the signal arising from the resonant excitation of excitonic transitions. For the case of an asymmetric GaAs/AIχ Ga1-χ As double quantum well, this interband contribution is shown to be dominant in comparison to the well known electrooptic effect monitoring the intraband dynamics. This finding is confirmed by experimental results. Excitation conditions suitable to separate the different contributions to the signal are suggested from the theoretical results.
