Abstract

The cofacially linked Group IV poly (phthalocyaninatometalloxane) macromolecules, left bracket M(Pc)O right bracket //n, M equals Si, Ge, Sn are precursors for a broad new class of environmentally stable and processable electrically conductive polymers. This contribution presents mechanistic information on the Ge(Pc)(OH)//2 polymerization by TEM (transmission electron microscopy) and DSC (differential scanning calorimetry). It reports on direct imaging of the left bracket Ge(Pc)O right bracket //n lattice (the first for a conductive polymer), new structural information on Ge(Pc)(OH)//2 evidence for the topotacticity of the polymerization process, and a reasonable mechanism for the polymerization.
